This 1907 film, Le Cochon Danseur (The Dancing Pig), features one of the most nightmarish anthropomorphic moments ever committed to film. At the end of the short film, the floor-pounding pig lips his lips to reveal a set of fangs worthy of a midnight movie monster. Lucky us, that early 20th century moment has lived on as a 21st century meme.
Le Cochon Danseur was based on a vaudeville act, and you can probably guess what it’s best remembered for. According to Know Your Meme, it spread from France to America, from theaters to television, a success (one could even say a memetic success) even decades later thanks to its bizarre ending. In 2007, the sequences of a tongue-licking, snarling pig enjoyed another media transformation when it began showing up on discussion forums as an animated gif.
One wonders if the original filmmakers could have foreseen the long and hilarious lifespan of the dancing pig, and that audiences would continue to be disturbed by it more than a hundred years later.
