How to Build a Time Machine for an Indie Movie
By Annalee Newitz
One of the many things we loved about indie time travel flick Safety Not Guaranteed was the jalopy time machine built by the possibly insane would-be time traveler (Mark Duplass). In this making-of short from the DVD (out today on DVD and Blu-Ray!) you can see how the crew built the thing from found objects around Seattle.
This is one of those rare movies that combines a genuinely nuanced character study with science fiction, maintaining a bittersweet humor throughout. It’s the story of a man who puts a want ad in the newspaper looking for fellow time travelers. When a group of journalists investigate his ad, an odd relationship blooms between Aubrey Plaza’s intern character and Duplass — and the mystery of the time machine deepens. If you are looking for some indie SF that can explode your mind without CGI, you need to check out Safety Not Guaranteed.
